Speakers
at the 2008 conference will include: David Almond, Laurence Anholt,
Anthony Browne, Polly Dunbar, Julia Eccleshare, Nicolette Jones, Graham
Marks, William Nicholson and the Children's Laureate Michael Rosen.
We
will hold debates on the perils of reviewing; a frank look at the
current state of the book market; the interaction between children's
publishing and other art forms (e.g. Hollywood).
Workshops/Parallel
Sessions will include: how to cope with school visits, taboos, from
picture book to cartoon film, how to survive as a poet, literary
agents, working in remote areas of Australia, publicity, how to manage
time, story-boarding, bringing back op books, an illustrator's view on
schools and festivals, the man from the DTI and much more.
Prices
Full Residential (Friday early evening to Sunday afternoon):
Members £255 + VAT = £299.62
Non Members £295 + VAT = £346.62
Non Residential (Saturday and Sunday only, includes all meals except breakfast):
Members £160 + VAT = £188

International School of Illustration
The opening of the summer courses 2008
The
Summer School, founded by Sˇ teˇpán Zavrˇel, in conjunction with the
municipal authorities of Sàrmede and the Province of Treviso, will be
offering its annual programme of illustration courses from 16 June to 9
August 2008 in Sàrmede (Italy).
The courses will be given by
artists of international renown who have developed their own individual
teaching methods which they have already put to the test in other
centres in Italy and abroad.
The aim of the courses is to help
to refine the artistic skills of artists who are seriously considering
a career in children's book illustrating.
Illustrations made
by the students of the International School, if selected, will be
displayed at the special section of the International Exhibition of
Illustrations for Children "Le Immagini della Fantasia".

The
Children's Laureate, MICHAEL ROSEN is one of the speakers in the
stellar cast taking part at the first annual Write Away conference.
Special earlybird rate for registration before 28th February 2008.
This
'inspirations' event aims to reinvogorate the teaching of non-fiction
reading and writing through the implementation of a creative
curriculum, harnessing the emotions and asserting the value of
aesthetic experience. Delegates will have the opportunity to hear
leading voices in the field reflect upon current practices as well
presenting innovative and practical ideas for development and change.
A
key feature of the conference is a programme of workshops co-presented
by writers and educators which will creatively explore different forms
of writing as well as the use of film, photography and drama.
Children's work will be on display during the day. Confirmed speakers
include Jonathan Douglas, Nicolette Jones, Martin Salisbury, Nicola
Davies, Vivian French, Marcia Williams, Julia Jarman,Richard Platt,
Anne Rooney, Prodeepta Das, David Reedy, Prue Goodwin, Nikki Gamble,
Julie Laslett and Marilyn Brocklehurst. With workshops presented by
Write Away reviewers, Emma Madden, Pam Craig, Kate Blake, Margaret
Pemberton and Samantha Hardy.

SCBWI Central West presents Mini Grey, winner of the Kate Greenaway Award 2007 for The Adventures of the Dish and the Spoon; Behind the Scenes with Picture Books; The Words and Pictures Double Act.
Saturday 19 January 2008 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. - 'Breathe' - 3 Temple Row West, fifth floor (opposite the west entrance of Birmingham Cathedral).
Author and illustrator Mini Grey has produced several award-winning picture books, including Biscuit Bear and Traction Man is Here. Pages filled with painted details, collage and visual jokes make up her signature artistic style. She loves drawing food: her first book Egg Drop featured an egg who had always wanted to fly!
A former theatre designer and primary teacher, Mini lives in Oxford. ---
