Ask A Marble October 29
We reached into the bag and pulled out a question for ourselves (thanks to Carol for some questions into that bag!)
What are your favorite writing tools? (thesaurus; rhyming dictionary; software program; writer guidelines; gel pens)
From Kim:
My favorite writing tools are:
1. My Webster's Dictionary/Thesaurus
2. Like Laurie, rhymezone.com
3. The Children's Writer's and Illustrator's Market (CWIM)
4. Gel Pens, because I'm one of those people that has to write it all down before I type it:)
From PJ:
My Mac Laptop
WriteExpress Rhymer (rhyming software)
Dictionary.com + Thesaurus
Good strong cuppa Lyons' tea (no joke--that's the
brand! It's from Ireland)
my Cleopatra sofa + my dog
From Laurie:
I actually love the challange of rhyming words but when I get really stuck, I go to rhymezone.com. It's a great tool. I also use a dictionary and thesaurus at times - usually the one on my computer. I have several books that I recently ordered that I hope will help in my writing. They are:
Story Sparkers by Macia Thorton Jones and Debbie Dadey
Children's Writers Word Book by Alijandra Mogilner and Tayopa Mogilner
One thing that really helps is to order them used from either Amazon or Barnes & Noble. You can save a lot of money.
From Deb:
My laptop, which is now a MAC. I am now using Jers Novel Writer for my novels, it thinks and organizes exactly how I write, so I love that too. I also use Word. Notebook, black and Bic pens, blue, for recording ideas, snippets of sights and conversations when I am out and about. Plus, I used my earphones quite a bit as I live in a busy household with much coming and going, going and coming. Lately I’ve been enjoying Vivaldi’s Four Seasons whilst working on certain writing projects. I also use a dictionary, thesaurus and Rhyme Zone!
From Chrissie:
My favorite writing tools are pretty basic!
My computer, as I write everything on it.
I use the thesaurus and spell check on the computer
Rhymezone if I am writing something in rhyme
Definately, a hot cup of tea - essential to an English woman! ...or something a little stronger occasionally ;)
Internet - I use this for research.
My marbly friends for honest feedback.
From Carol:
Aside from my computer, desk and chair…
When I’m totally stuck, I sip spiced chai, stuff my teddy bear in my lap and type with my arms around her. I think she’s been inhabited by my muse.
When I’m not stuck but seeking ways to procrastinate, I set my kitchen timer for 2 hours and not allow myself out of my chair until it rings.
